Session Description
During the facilitated training, participants will gain understanding of the formative coaching process and make connections between observing and coaching teachers and the North Carolina School Executive Standards. Small groups of observers will view a video of a classroom observation, mark descriptors observed during the observation, and document evidences to justify the marks. After the observation, participants will discuss evidences they collected, as well as why specific descriptors were marked. Upon building consensus on the descriptors marked during the observation, participants will collaborate to write a formative coaching plan for the teacher in order to help him/her grow professionally. Participants will also work to develop a coaching plan for a teacher within their school buildings.

Target Audience
This session is targeted for principals, assistant principals, and district administrators who observe, coach, and evaluate teachers using the NC Professional Teaching Standards.

Session Outcomes
The learner will:
  • connect the North Carolina School Executive Standards to teacher observation and coaching.
  • understand the formative coaching process.
  • apply the formative coaching process to a teacher observation.
  • create a coaching plan for a teacher in his/her school building.
